Voluntary Running Wheel Assessments

Figure 1: Average meters per hour on wheel over 3 days for BL10 (n=12) versus MDX (n=12) male mice at 6 weeks. Rotations starting at time 0 (11am) with active peak at hour 12 (9pm-3am).

Voluntary running wheel can be used as a measure of murine behavioural activity and consequently to explore how deviations in behaviour may relate to the efficacy of a specific treatment. The assay reveals an individual animal’s voluntary capacity for running on a wheel. Mice are placed in individual voluntary running wheel cages, and the number of wheel rotations are recorded to give the total distance run over a certain period of time.
